Sacramento County Sheriff's Office investigators are probing a gun violence incident that took place Saturday evening at Howe Park as authorities were clearing an unlawful assembly of an estimated several hundred individuals.
Before the Gunfire
Law enforcement initially got calls about the park at about 6:30 Saturday evening after obtaining information of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. Shortly after, a second caller reported describing a possible physical fight happening within the park grounds.
An overhead unit conducted an aerial sweep but came back with no confirmation of a fight. Nevertheless, deputies found that several hundred individuals had congregated at Howe Park without official sanction.
The Moment Gunfire Erupted
Responding units set about removing people from the park by surrounding the park and issuing commands over loudspeakers instructing attendees to clear out. Roughly 15 minutes were allowed for individuals to vacate.
While deputies worked to disperse the gathering that upwards of 20 gunshots were fired. The shots sent the crowd running in all directions. Law enforcement immediately began looking for those injured.
Four People Shot
When the dust settled, four individuals were discovered with shooting injuries. The shooting victims — comprising three men and one woman each reported to be in their 20s at the time of the incident — were taken to nearby hospitals. Hospital staff stated that two had critical injury classifications, one of the four had moderate gunshot wounds, and one person's injuries were considered minor. As of last report, no fatalities were reported Sacramento park shooting 2026 and all four were stable.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department also responded and helped care for the injured prior to hospital transport.
Physical Evidence
The center of the incident appears to have happened near the Cottage Way corridor adjacent to the Home Depot located at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Crime scene investigators located more spent casings on the Cottage Way roadway. Projectile impacts were noted in the iron perimeter fence surrounding the Home Depot store. The physical evidence confirmed that one of the gunmen had been discharging rounds toward the south from along Cottage Way targeting the Home Depot. That Home Depot location was put under lockdown during the incident. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives remained on scene well into the night.
Detainees in Solano County
Intelligence received through law enforcement radio communications indicated that a Kia was pulled over in the Solano County area. Four people were taken into custody. Sacramento law enforcement were heading to pick up the four detainees to transport the detainees for questioning. Surveillance footage revealed that the shooting involved two separate gunmen.
